Something old, something new . . . something beaded in bronze?
Something ostrich-feathered and aqua blue? This surprising book-on-the-wall
surveys a much wider history of American bridal dress than the snowy
confections summoned by the Victorian-inspired "white wedding" that
has come to dominate the most evocative of our cultural traditions.
More than seventy gowns, accessories, and historical portraits and
anecdotes from twelve North American public and private collections
prove that even what is most universal need be anything but uniform.
Among these national treasures from 1806-1985 are the dresses of
a mid-nineteenth century ship captain's daughter, an American silk
heiress, a gold miner's 1863 mail-order bride, and Gertrude Vanderbilt.
